Public Outreach Report
PA AWSC
5/17/24 thru 5/19/24 – Altoona, PA
“It isn’t unusual to enter the doors of an Al-Anon Family Group in a state of distress. Despite the confusion and chaos we may be experiencing, the program offers us hope that by improving our attitudes, we can live better, happier lives. In Al-Anon meetings we meet people who have had experiences similar to ours. They share how much their lives have improved. They show us that our past failures don’t have to limit our future growth as long as we are willing to learn new approaches.”

As we start this year with the “Back to Basics” theme, the first area I would like to concentrate on is – THE NEWCOMER.
It is often said at meetings that the newcomer is the most important person in an Al-Anon meeting. What can we do to insure that the Newcomer feels safe and welcome?

Do we have members welcome a Newcomer? Do we hold a Newcomer meeting?

What literature do we provide?

Do we provide phone numbers of fellow members that the Newcomer can call?

Is our meeting safe? Inviting? Accessible to all?
These are just the start of some questions that I would like to address as we begin our journey to strengthen the base of our Al-Anon meetings.
We will be holding a Public Outreach ZOOM call for all District Public Outreach Coordinators as well as any member that is interested on Thursday, June 13th at 7:30 PM. The purpose of this call will be to brainstorm on ideas on welcoming and embracing Newcomers in our groups. Zoom information is below. Please feel free to share with your group.
